- About Nordic Chamber The NCCI logo is inspired by the Bangladesh National Monument Jatiyo Sriti Soudho as well as the Nordic sail ship history and the colours of the Nordic flag The Nordic Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bangladesh (NCCI) was founded on 23rd November 2010 as a joint initiative of the Nordic Companies and Embassies in Bangladesh. The Nordic businesses have a strong presence in Bangladesh, making significant contributions in various sectors. Trade relations between the Nordic Countries and Bangladesh have grown steadily over the years. Bangladesh’s export earnings were more than 500 million dollars from Nordic Countries in 2009/2010, an increase of 14.5% from 2008/2009 fiscal year. Similarly, Nordic Countries export earnings has also been in upward trend. The overall objective of NCCI is first of all to create a strong network for Nordic Companies already operating in Bangladesh. An objective is also to create a strong and unified voice for the Nordic Companies. The Chamber will also seek to provide assistance and advice for new Nordic Companies aspiring to do business in Bangladesh. Finally, it will also be an objective of the Chamber to create more awareness of Nordic technology solutions in Bangladesh as well as helping create more awareness about Bangladesh in the Nordic countries.

- About Nordic Countries[slider width="920" height="400"] [/slider] The Nordic countries refers to a region in Northern Europe which consists of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden and their associated territories – Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland. The Nordic countries share a common history and cultural traits. They have a strong cooperation politically through the Nordic Council, an inter-parliamentary forum. The Nordic countries have a combined population of approximately 25 million spread over a land area of 3.5 million km². The Nordic countries have a relatively strong economy. The Nordic countries share similar traits in the policies implemented under the postwar period, especially in the socio-economic area. All Nordic countries have large tax-funded public welfare sectors and extensive social-democratic legislation. The Nordic countries have achieved global recognition for the promotion of gender equality, parliamentary democracy, equal constitutional rights for every citizen, social security and service system. DENMARK Denmark is situated in the north of Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. The total size of its territory is 42,394 sq km and it has 5.432,335 inhabitants. Denmark is a constitutional monarchy, with Copenhagen as its capital. Queen Margrethe II marked 40th anniversary of her succession to the country’s throne in 2012. She became the first female sovereign of Denmark in 1972. But, the parliament, Folketinget, is the country’s highest authority. Denmark is a member of the European Union. But, the national currency remains the Danish krone. Denmark currently holds the EU Presidency in the first half of 2012. Denmark is a strong supporter of trade liberalization and is a member of WTO & OECD. Denmark represents mixed economy with high dependence on foreign trade which represents two-third of the GDP. The major drivers of Danish Economy are foreign trade, government welfare measures, technology driven agriculture, service-oriented sectors, high living standard and a stable currency. Denmark has one of the lowest poverty rates and lowest income disparities in the world. The most important sources of revenue in Denmark are oil, energy, the medical industry, agricultural products, shipping and IT services. Visit Official Country Site FAROE ISLANDS The Faroe Island is an archipelago of 18 islands in the North Atlantic and are a self-governing nation under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. It has a total land area of 1,399 km2 and a population of just over 48,000. over a third of the Faroese population lives and works in the capital, Tórshavn. A local parliament – the Loegting – looks after the islands’ affairs, although Copenhagen is responsible for defence and foreign relations. Infrastructure in the Faroe Islands is extremely well developed. Telecommunications and high speed internet plus a comprehensive road network and tunnel and ferry connections all provide an excellent base for maintaining the economic, social and cultural viability of communities all around the country. While the islands’ rugged coastlines and extensive bird life is a draw for some, the Faroes also offer the prospect of major offshore reserves of oil and gas. The Faroe Islands participate actively in a range of international fisheries management arrangements and organisations. Fishing is the main economic activity on the islands, and Danish subsidies remain an important source of income. Visit Official Country Site FINLAND Finland is situated in the north of Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia, and Gulf of Finland. The total size of its territory is 304,473 sq km and has a population of 5.5 million. Finland is a republic, with Helsinki as its capital. The president, who is directly elected by the people, has real power over foreign affairs, EU policy and major military decisions. In all other matters, the parliament is the the country’s highest authority. Finland attaches special importance to principles such as democracy, the rule of law and human rights, in line with long-established Nordic values. Finland is a member of EU, cooperates with NATO in the PfP programme and in UN peacekeeping operations. The currency of Finland is Euro. Finland has an advanced industrial economy. The metal, engineering and electronics industries account for about 60 % of export revenues, the forest products industry for about 20 %. Finland is one of the leading countries in Internet use. Today, there are more mobile phones than fixed network subscriptions. Finland is also called ‘the land of the thousand lakes’, as inland lakes and rivers make up 10% of the country. The forests cover almost two thirds of the land mass. Visit Official Country Site ICELAND Iceland is an island located in the North Atlantic Ocean.It has a population of about 320,000 and a total area of 103,000 km2. Its capital and the largest city is Reykjavík. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. Iceland is a republic with a directly elected president, who is formally responsible for appointing the prime minister. The parliament, Althing, is Iceland’s highest authority. Reykjavik is the capital city. Iceland is not a member of the EU, but takes part in European economic co-operation through the EEA Agreement. Iceland is a member of NATO. The króna is the currency of Iceland. Iceland has a free market economy with relatively low taxes while maintaining a Nordic welfare system.Iceland is considered to be one of the wealthiest and most developed nations in the world. In 2011, it was ranked as the 14th most developed country in the world by the United Nations’ Human Development Index. In 2008, political unrest occurred as the nation’s entire banking system systemically failed. Fish and fish products are still Iceland’s most important revenue sources, followed by exports of aluminium and iron silicon. In recent years, Iceland has experienced growth in sectors including biotechnology, software and tourism. Norway borders to Sweden in the east, Finland and Russia in the north-east. The country has approximately 4.7 million inhabitants. Norway is a constitutional monarchy, with Oslo as its capital. King Harald V has little real political power, but fills an important symbolic function as the Head of State and official representative of Norwegian society and industry. The parliament, Stortinget, is the country’s highest authority. Norway is not a member of the EU, but takes part in European economic co-operation through the EEA Agreement. Norway is a member of NATO. Promotion of peace and reconciliation is an integral component of the country’s cohesive, long-term foreign policy.The Norwegian Krone is the currency of Norway. The Norwegian economy is generally characterized as a mixed economy – a capitalist market economy with a clear component of state influence. The largest revenue sources for Norway are the extraction and export of oil and natural gas. The country is richly endowed with natural resources – petroleum, hydropower, fish, forests, and minerals. Shipping and tourism are also the major driver of the country’s economy. Visit Official Country Site SWEDEN Sweden is the largest and most populated country in the Nordic region. The total size of its territory is 410,934 sq km and it has 9.1 million inhabitants. Sweden is a constitutional monarchy, with Stockholm as its capital. King Carl XVI Gustaf has a largely ceremonial role, and the parliament, Riksdagen, is the country’s hghest authority. Sweden is a member of the EU, but maintains its own currency, krona. Sweden is an active and vocal participant in the UN and WTO. Sweden is a member of NATO’s Partnership for Peace (PFP). Sweden is among the world’s richest and most technologically advanced nations. Sweden’s transformation has been helped by a successful combination of generous welfare benefits and high-tech capitalism. It constantly places near the top in international rankings of competitiveness, innovation and standard of living. The Swedish economy is built on rich reserves of iron ore and timber, and plentiful hydroelectric power. The main industrial sectors are forestry, telecoms, and the automotive and pharmaceutical industries. The country is aided with high levels of education and a skilled workforce, sophisticated infrastructure. - Why Become a Member?Why you should become a member of NCCI? NCCI will become a unified and strong voice in Bangladesh for the Nordic companies. As a member of NCCI you will receive a periodic news update with information on issues of interest for Nordic companies and you will every quarter be invited for a “Wall Street Meeting”. At the Wall Street Meeting one of the Nordic Ambassadors will give a brief on the political and economic situation in Bangladesh. The Wall Street Meetings will also be used for inviting local VIP’s for discussions on relevant subjects as investment climate, infrastructure issues etc. Nordic companies will also be encouraged to participate with presentations on initiatives, challenges or other issues of interests. It is also the intention to invite local VIP’s such as Ministers, representatives from Board of Investment, Energy and other infrastructure authorities etc. As member of the NCCI you will also be invited to social gatherings and other ad hoc arrangements initiated by the chamber – e.g. conferences focusing on issues like CSR or Doing business in Bangladesh. The NCCI will have a full time employed secretariat and the chamber is expect to build capacity to be able to advise Nordic companies in how to set-up business in Bangladesh and how to e.g. carry out CSR-work and who to contact when having legal issues etc.
- Membership CategoriesCORPORATE MEMBERSHIP Corporate Membership is open for all legal entities (companies and organizations) registered in a Nordic country or in Bangladesh having at least 20% Nordic ownership. Non-Nordic companies with a strong relation with any Nordic country may be granted membership for up to three years through a 25% quota. The onetime enrolment fee (non-refundable) for corporate Members is $500 and the annual subscription fee is $300. INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP Individual Membership is open for any individual over the age of 18 working in a legally registered representative office or branch of a Nordic company or organization in Bangladesh and Nordic citizens working, living or studying in Bangladesh. Non-nordic individuals can apply for selected Membership for up to three years. The onetime enrolment fee (non-refundable) for individual Members is $100 and the annual subscription fee is $100. HONORARY MEMBERSHIP The NCCI Committee can by unanimous decision grant honorary Memberships to companies and individuals for their outstanding accomplishments and stature in the community and who have made notable contribution to the promotion of Trade and Commerce between Nordic countries and Bangladesh. All Nordic Ambassadors in Bangladesh are Honourary Members. There are no fees applied to Honourary Membership. - Honorary Members DR. HALDOR TOPSØE Dr. Haldor Topsøe was born on May 24, 1913, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He studied chemical engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). In 1940 he founded the Haldor Topsøe A/S – a catalyst and technology company, involved in the development and production of hydro-treating catalysts with a vision that the company should be a good place to work. Haldor Topsøe A/S has become one of the most successful companies in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. The company develops and markets catalysts and processes for petroleum refining, air-pollution control, synthesis gas production, ammonia and methanol production and solid oxide fuel cells. The company Haldor Topsøe is also a leader in the production and state-of-the-art scientific characterization of new catalysts. Dr. Topsøe is currently the sole owner of the company. He has written numerous articles on ammonia synthesis, catalysis, and energy questions. He is the author of several books on economics. Dr. Topsøe has received numerous awards, including honorary doctorates from Aarhus University, DTU, and the Chalmers University in Sweden; the Gold Medal from the Royal Academy of Sciences; the Hoover Medal for his technical abilities and entrepreneurship; and the Grove Memorial Medal for Advances in Fuel Cell Technology. Topsøe is a member of the Danish and the Swedish Academies of Technical Sciences and of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Topsøe’s family owned company, which bears his name, is among the top foreign investors in Bangladesh. Notably they have a very successful joint venture with the Government of Bangladesh in the Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO) in Chittagong. Dr. Haldor Topsøe ranks as one of the most senior Danish entrepreneurs. He has been personally and commercially active in Bangladesh even before the separation from India and he remains an icon of Danish international commercial entrepreneurship. Together with his team, he is preparing the ground for future major investments in Bangladesh. On 14th September 2011, The Nordic Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bangladesh (NCCI) awarded the first Honorary Membership to Dr. Haldor Topsøe for his outstanding contribution and support to the development of Bangladesh. LATIFUR RAHMAN Mr. Latifur Rahman is the Chairman and CEO of Transcom Group, ICC Bangladesh Vice President, Chairman, Nestlé Bangladesh, Holcim Bangladesh (world leader in cement) and National Housing Finance & Investments. Director, Linde Bangladesh (formerly British Oxygen) and Member, Governing Body of Brac, world’s largest NGO. Transcom, originated with tea plantations in 1885, is now one of the largest corporate houses in Bangladesh, comprising 16 public and private companies, employing more than 10,000 people. Executive Committee

NCCI is governed by an all-volunteer seven member Executive Committee, elected by the members. The Executive Committee’s key responsibility is to provide strategic direction for the Chamber. The Executive Committee meets on a regular basis to review organizational activities, assist in coordinating the execution of Chamber policies and help NCCI achieve its organizational goal of serving the Nordic business community in Bangladesh.
The Executive Committee consists of President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary General and three Members. NCCI’s operations are managed by an Executive Director, who is responsible for the implementation of strategy and policies as defined by the Executive Committee.
