MCC launches direct Shanghai-Chittagong service

MCC Transport, the leading shipping line connecting Intra-Asia and Bangladesh, will launch a direct service on 16th September, 2011, linking Bangladesh and China.

The new service, Shanghai 1 (SH1), provides the fastest transit time in the market from Shanghai to Chittagong. This weekly service has a transit time of just 12 days from Shanghai (Waigaoqiao) to Chittagong, and vice versa, without any trans-shipment handling via feeder vessels. The new SH-1 service runs on a 28-days rotation covering the ports of Shanghai – Tanjung Pelepas – Chittagong – Port Klang – Singapore – Shanghai.

This service will significantly boost the competitive position of Bangladesh in international trade. With this service, the raw materials for the Ready Made Garments (RMG) sector can be imported to Bangladesh in the shortest possible lead time, thereby greatly benefiting the Bangladesh garments industry. Importers of machineries will also stand to benefit from the service. Bangladeshi exporters of products, including jute, waste garments, food items, and most importantly, frozen fish, can also take advantage of the fast transit time being offered. The direct establishment of shipping line will lead to a reduction of freight cost per container for Bangladesh.

The weekly Shanghai 1 (SH1) service will be run with four vessels, each of which will arrive at Chittagong on Friday and depart on Tuesday. As a testimonial to the importance of Bangladesh to the Intra-Asia trade, one of the vessels on this service has been named “MCC DHAKA”, after the capital of Bangladesh.

Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, Danish Ambassador Svend Olling, MCC Tansport CEO Tim Wickman was invited as special guests. The event was moderated by MCC Transport Country Manager, Mr. Tanvir Imam. The programme was attended by NCCI Members, NCCI President & Executive Director, and Bangladeshi business leaders from various sectors.
